Emergency Orthodontist in Fort Walton Beach, FL
Something doesn't feel right?
We're here to help.
Broken bracket? Poking wire? Lost aligner?
Most orthodontic problems aren’t true emergencies, but that doesn’t mean you should be left wondering what to do.
Contact Bayer & Curtis Orthodontics and let us know what’s going on. Our team can help determine what needs immediate attention, what can wait, and what you can do to stay comfortable in the meantime.
Visiting the Emerald Coast? We’re here for you, too.
Dr. Curtis has called Fort Walton Beach home her entire life. As the daughter of Dr. Peter Bayer, she grew up seeing firsthand the relationships that made Bayer & Curtis Orthodontics such a trusted part of the community.
After earning her dental degree and completing advanced specialty training in orthodontics, she returned home to continue the practice her father founded in 1972.
Today, she’s honored to care for many of the same families her father once treated (and now, their children too) carrying that legacy forward with the latest advancements in orthodontic care.
What is considered an orthodontic emergency?
Most problems with braces, clear aligners, retainers, or other appliances aren’t true emergencies, but you should still let your orthodontist know what’s going on.

- A poking or broken braces wire
- A loose band or appliance
- A lost or damaged retainer
- A lost, cracked, or damaged clear aligner

We’ll help you determine the appropriate next step.

Not sure whether you need to come into the office?
Send our team a message and tell us what’s going on. We may ask you to send a few photos so we can take a closer look and determine whether an in-office visit is needed.
It’s a convenient way to get guidance, especially if you’re traveling, away from Fort Walton Beach, or can’t immediately make it into the office
What to Do When Something Goes Wrong
Broken, Loose or Floating Braces Bracket
Poking or Loose Braces Wire
Lost or Damaged Clear Aligner
If you’ve lost an Invisalign® or other clear aligner, don’t automatically move ahead to the next set.
Contact us first. What you should do depends on where you are in treatment and how long you’ve been wearing your current aligners. We’ll help you determine the appropriate next step.
Lost or Broken Retainer
A vacation souvenir shouldn’t be your teeth shifting because your retainer is somewhere at the bottom of the Gulf.
If you’ve lost or damaged your retainer, contact us as soon as possible. We’ll help determine the next step so you can protect your smile.
Orthodontic Appliance Is Loose or Broken
If an expander or another orthodontic appliance becomes loose, damaged, or uncomfortable, stop adjusting it and contact your orthodontist for guidance.
Bayer & Curtis patients can send our team a message so we can take a look. If you’re visiting the area, contact us and let us know what’s going on.
What if my braces are damaged in an accident?
If an accident causes damage to your braces or appliance, contact our team for guidance.
If you’ve experienced a serious injury to your teeth, mouth, face, or jaw, seek emergency medical or dental care first. Once the injury has been addressed, we can help with any damage to your orthodontic appliances.
Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontic Emergencies
What should I do if my braces bracket fell off?
If a braces bracket falls off or becomes loose, contact your orthodontist and explain what happened.
If you’re a Bayer & Curtis patient, you can contact our team and send photos if needed so we can determine whether the bracket needs to be repaired right away or can safely wait until your next visit.
Is a loose or floating braces bracket an emergency?
A loose or floating braces bracket usually isn’t a medical emergency, but you should let your orthodontist know.
If it’s causing irritation, orthodontic wax may help keep the area comfortable temporarily. Contact us so we can determine whether the bracket needs to be repaired and when you should come in.
What should I do if I lose my Invisalign aligner?
If you lose an Invisalign or clear aligner, contact your orthodontist before moving to another set.
The right next step depends on your individual treatment plan and how long you wore the missing aligner. We can help determine whether you should wear a previous aligner, move forward, or follow another plan.
What should I do if I lose my retainer on vacation?
If you’re visiting Fort Walton Beach, Destin, or the surrounding Emerald Coast and lose or damage your retainer, contact Bayer & Curtis Orthodontics. Tell us what’s going on, and we’ll let you know how we may be able to help while you’re away from home.
